Biography of Arthur Augustus Applegate
He settled in Jackson Township, Osborne County, Kansas.
He was the son of John T. Applegate and Hannah S. Couch. He was a farmer and Justice of the Peace, Osborne County, Kansas. He was a member of the Baptist Church, Cheyenne Community.
Ella's birth parents were deaf-mutes. Her father was Patrick Henry Knapp. She and her sister, Rose, were adopted by the Taplin family, who were friends of the Knapp family. The birth mother was not well. Both parents wanted their daughters to live a normal life. The father, Patrick, was a carpenter and a cabinet maker. It was not known at that time if the "deaf-muteness" was hereditary or the result of some childhood disease, such as typhoid fever. After several generations, "childhood disease" seems the likely answer. Both Frances and Rose kept in touch with their parents. Both parents died in their early forties. Ella's real grandfather was Samuel Tusing and her Great Grandfather was John Tusing.
